Becoming a follower of Jesus Christ
Ancient people passed on the knowledge of their ancestors to the younger generation through storytelling, mentorship, or apprenticeships. Philosophers did similar things by giving wisdom to their community, who cared for listening. Many of them displayed wisdom while sitting under trees, and people came to listen to them. Aristotle, Socrates, Protagoras and Thales are famous philosophers of history. African older people, like grandparents, told their grandchildren and children in their neighbourhood evening moonlight stories to impart wisdom to learn new ideas through myths to guide and gain knowledge relevant to their survival. Young Jewish boys often have older men as mentors to whom they look for guidance. Asians also have a style of mentoring the young. All of these informal meetings, but regulated by various cultures, are on issues about life, ethics, worship, and adulthood.
In this study series, we want to know who Jesus Christ truly is and how to benefit from God through Jesus.

Becoming a disciple of Jesus Christ: 1

Jesus Christ called 12 disciples to come to be with him so they would learn from Him and know what God has in mind for humanity, thereby going to pass the same messages to the rest of humanity. Let us do a quick Bible search: –
- Mention or write the names of the significant persons in this story and their encounters with Jesus:
- John 3:1-10 ____________________
- John 1:43-50 ___________________
- Luke 7:1-10 ____________________
- Look through your Bible (Paper/hardcover or mobile app) for the following people and identify where in the Bible Jesus visited or sought to bring them to Himself:
- Peter, James and John (in Matthew).
- Zachaeus (in Luke).
- Look through your Bible (Paper/hardcover or mobile app) for the following people and identify where in the Bible God visited or sent angels to visit and help them in their time of need:
- Adam and Eve (Genesis)
- Abraham (Genesis)
- Mr and Mrs Manoah (Judges)
- The three Hebrew men inside of fire (Daniel)
- Joseph (in Matthew)
Form a group of five and read the following Bible passage and answer the questions that follow: Mark 3: 7-19
- Let two members of your small group describe what you have read in Mark 3: 7-12.
- Why did a multitude of people follow Jesus, and from which towns and cities?
- What did Jesus do in verse 9, and what can we learn from that? He avoided being crushed as people pressed to touch Him and entered the boat.
- What kind of healing can you identify in that reading (Verses 10 and 11)? (Afflicted by unclean spirits).
- Through cross-referencing, what kind of healing did Jesus talk about in the parable of the Good Samaritan? Read Luke 10:30-37.
- Why did the good man/Samaritan in Jesus’ story bandage the injured man’s wound?
- When the Samaritan could not perform more than bandaging, he transported the injured person to an inn (or clinic). His intervention took him the whole night (verse 35), and he had to wait until the next day.
- He gave some money (two denarii equivalent to the two-day wage of a labourer) to what we will call hospital workers, clinicians, and/or medical doctors to look after him.
- He promised to give the healthcare staff more money, if necessary, but they should not stop the treatment. ‘Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you.’ Luke 10:35b NKJV.
- What lessons can we learn from the story of the healing Jesus presented here? Read Luke 5:31: Jesus answered and said to them, Those who are well do not need a physician, but those who are sick.
Jesus Appointed the 12 Disciples in Mark 3:13-19
Jesus went to the mountain to avoid distractions, prayed and chose 12 disciples to be with Him. From our knowledge of the Bible, let us discuss what could be the daily experiences of these disciples from all we know about Jesus’ life and ministry. Provide a Bible passage in which each can be found.
- His teaching about repentance and forgiveness
- His teaching about believing in God and what He teaches.
- His teaching of holiness.
- His teaching about love
- His teaching about prayers
- His teaching of God’s power
- His teachings about the Kingdom of God.
We will continue this discussion in future studies.
Prayer and commitment:
LORD Jesus, open my mind and understanding to know what God has for me and how to please Him in my everyday life in Christ’s name. Amen.
